What to wear for your photoshoot?
Is quite possibly the question I am asked THE most and also the question I happiest to talk about time and time again because it means you want to get it right and you’re serious about your photoshoot. As getting the styling right really is the ONE thing you can do to ensure your photos are sensational, I will take care of the rest.
So here’s my go-to guide for making outfit choices easy, enjoyable, and photo-ready!
Dress for your Setting
Most of my sessions take place in natural, outdoor locations. Think countryside, fields, woodlands. With that in mind, I recommend outfits that suit the relaxed, earthy vibe.
Go casual: Floaty dresses, jumpers, jeans, and relaxed fabrics are perfect. Textures and linens really do work well.
Choose comfy footwear: Boots, sandals, or shoes you don’t mind getting a little muddy.
Coordinate with nature: Greens, rusts, soft yellows, browns, blues, and neutrals look gorgeous outdoors.
Colours & Coordination
Your colours don’t need to match—but they should complement each other.
Stick to 2–3 tones for the whole family (e.g. earth tones, muted blues, neutrals).
Avoid neon, logos, or bold prints. These distract from your faces and can clash.
Muted or earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family.
Hot tip: Dressing everyone in identical outfits (like white tops and jeans) can flatten your images. Instead, aim for individuality within a cohesive palette.
Textures & Layers
Adding texture and layers makes your images come alive.
Think knits, denim, lace, corduroy, linen.
Layer up with cardigans, jackets, scarves, or hats for extra interest (and variety).
For kids, try a jumper over the shoulder, a cute hat or a chunky scarf—small changes give totally new looks.
If your session isn’t a mini and we’ve got time, bring a second outfit for the children for even more variety.
Don’t Forget Yourself, Mum!
Mums often focus so much on everyone else that they forget themselves. This is your moment too!
Treat yourself to a new dress, a hair appointment, or a touch of makeup.
Don’t go overboard—keep makeup light and natural, but add a pop of colour to lips, cheeks, and eyes to lift your look.
Bring lip gloss for touch-ups—especially with little smoochers around!
Where to Shop
To keep things simple, shop at one store or stick to one brand to ensure tones and styles complement each other.
Some favourites include:
Next
Zara
H&M
(Especially helpful when dressing multiple kids!)
Session Day Checklist
Here’s what to pack for the day:
Second outfit (if you’re changing)
Touch-up makeup
Water bottle (especially in warmer weather)
Coat or blanket for warmth in colder months
Snacks for little ones
Wipes and tissues (just in case)
Plan Ahead
Give yourself plenty of time to prepare. That way you can relax and enjoy your session without stress or last-minute panic. If someone gets a haircut you regret (we’ve all been there!), you’ll still have time to adjust.
Choose timeless pieces you’ll love for years to come—not just what’s trendy right now. These photos will live on your walls, your shelves, and your heart for years to come.
Final Thought
Your future memories are so important to me. I want you to feel relaxed, confident, and beautiful during your session. Laugh a lot. Hug tightly. Be yourselves. And I’ll take care of the rest.
Cant wait to see you,
Charlotte
