The Secret Garden , Mortimers Hidden Gem

When I was a little girl, my mum used to take my sister and I strawberry picking. It was always such a treat for us. Half because we’d eat our body weight in strawberries and the other half because we’d be able to run free in the beautiful gardens and fields of Mortimer Hill where the ‘pick your own’ was located. I distinctly remember how magical it felt as a child. I remember the shop where we’d go to weigh our precious finds, and the man used to say to my mum, “I’m not sure if I should be weighing the punnet or your children” as he eyed up the strawberry mess all over our faces and clothes.

Mortimer Hill's Strawberry Fields held such lovely memories for me as a child. Fast forward 40 odd years (Jesus am I really that old?) you can imagine just how happy I was to secure my little studio there. There are a handful of studios, all filled with hugely talented creatives and an array of mediums from sculptors, artists, glass makers, weavers, and jewellery makers. Its a great place to be inspired and create. They often have Open Studio’s sessions where you can see and buy the artists work. Do check out the facebook page if you would like to find out more (https://www.facebook.com/artistsatmortimerhill) there is one this weekend!

This personal project and series of images for The Secret Gardens collection have been inspired by my childhood memories of Mortimer Hill.
